Sun Records producer Sam Phillips wanted to start gospel line of music for the label (undoubtedly to remain in competition with RCA Victor and Columbia, who also had gospel lines) and wanted Swaggart for Sun as the label’s first gospel artist. Being too poor to own a home, the Swaggarts lived in church basements, pastors’ homes, and small motels. Swaggart worked several part-time odd jobs in order to support his young family and also began singing Southern Gospel music at various churches.Īccording to his biography, Swaggart, along with his wife and son, lived in poverty during the 1950s as he preached throughout rural Louisiana, struggling to survive on US$30 a week. On October 10, 1952, Swaggart married Frances Anderson. With his parents, Swaggart attended a small, 25-member Assemblies of God church in Ferriday. He is the cousin of rock’n’roll pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis and country music star Mickey Gilley. Swaggart was born in Ferriday, Louisiana, to Willie Leon (a.k.a., "Son") and Minnie Belle ( Herron) Swaggart. The ministry also publishes a monthly magazine, The Evangelist. He is the author of the Expositor’s Study Bible, 13 study guides and 30 commentaries on the Bible. Swaggart is the author of about 20 Christian books offered through his ministry. WEBC offers three levels of degrees: intensive short term certificate programs, Associate of Arts degree programs, and a four-year Bachelor’s degree program. Many students did not return after the spring 1988 semester, due in part to the scandal and accreditation. The college began as a means of preparing young men and women for Christian ministry, including education and communication degrees, and is still considered by Swaggart to be a vital extension of Jimmy Swaggart’s World Wide Ministry. In that same year Jimmy was a Dove Award finalist in three categories: Male Vocalist of the Year, TV Program of the Year, and Instrumentalist of the Year. In 1977 “Record World” Magazine honored him as Male Vocalist of the Year.
In 1974 Jimmy Swaggart was voted Favorite Gospel Music Artist for “Singing News”. However, with a heart to minister the Gospel, the young Swaggart turned him down. He wanted to sign Jimmy Swaggart as the first Gospel artist on the Sun Record Label. In the spring of 1958 Sam Philips (the producer who discovered Elvis Presley) had sent for the small town, piano-playing, preacher to come to Memphis. As Jimmy Swaggart’s songs began to be aired on radio, the public response was overwhelming. Recognizing his gift, Frances Swaggart began encouraging him to contact radio stations. His first album, Some Golden Daybreak, was made primarily to have a record he could give people at his early revivals.
Reverend Swaggart has recorded over 50 Gospel Albums, with approximately 15 million Recordings sold worldwide. Jimmy Swaggart Ministries has long been known for its anointed music.
